What kind of job would I want?

The type of job I would want is something in the entertainment industry. To be honest I’m working toward voice acting, but in the meantime while I work on not sounding like a stuffy teen we’ll talk about the job similar to that, audio designing. There’s a senior sound designer job for PUBG (player unknown battle grounds) that would be nice right now, mainly because I like shooter games, and I want to try my hand in game designing at some point.

The Job

This job consists of working closely with teams, work with the Unreal Engine 4, and edit, mix, and master audio materials. To be qualified for this job you need to fill in a certain criteria. You must be experienced in Unreal Engine 4 and scripting, masterful in pro tools, must have a masterful ear for audio, and of course have 5+ years experience in AAA game audio design. This job pays $14K – $242K a year. This isn’t exactly freelance, it’s a temporary position.

And of course this isn’t the only job that I’d like to get, I would like to work with other companies when I get off the ground in voice acting. That’s why the program that I like to use when it comes to anything audio is Adobe audition. I used it a few times to mix audio together that I get from sites like freesound.org to make background sounds, sort of like the ones you’d hear in games.

But until then I’ll need to keep working on my skills and get better equipment for recording for the job that I hope to get. My current equipment is good enough now but there’s always room for improvement.

How to prepare for a multimedia job

We’ve talked about the jobs you’ll be getting in the past but we haven’t yet talked about the process of getting the jobs, or what you need to do in order to prepare.

Resumes

Photo by Van Tay Media on Unsplash

It’s always good to have a great resume when going for an interview in order to show where you’ve been and what you’ve done. There’s a few ways to build your resumes, there are a few resume builders that can help you build your resume. It can contain what you’ve done in the past, which can include jobs within the media industry or out of it, which is what you interviewer can use to determine your work ethic.

Interviews

On the topic of interviews here’s a few questions you might be asked and some general advice.

  • What would you do if there’s down time? The best answer would be: I like to take the initiative and look for other things to work on. When it comes to most jobs there’s always something to do. Even when there’s nothing there is still something.
  • Why do you want to work here vs. (Insert other company here)? Just be honest, tell them what you like about this place than the other one.
  • What are you expecting out of this position? Just tell them what you can do and what you want to bring to the table.
  • They’ll also ask you technical questions like: How do this? or How do you format that? Just answer them correctly. I’m sure you know what you need to do.
  • How much experience have you had in “this field”? Preferably they would want greater than the amount they require, but if you have almost as much as they need then there’s a slim chance they might accept you.
  • Would traveling suit you? Unless you are in some way obligated to stay put, say yes.
  • Are you still interested in this position? You we’re willing to show up, and not cancel so yes.
  • Are you sure you want to work in this industry? Yes.
  • Why did you leave your last job? Just tell them that you wanted to change your career, or that you wanted to make better use of your skills. Whatever you do don’t put on a show about how much you hated working at retail or anything, it’s unprofessional.
  • Did Epstine kill himself? Okay that’s not a real question but you might get those funny joke type questions like: “coke or pepsi?”, those are usually asked post interview because these guys are cool.

So these are the things you need to know about Multimedia interviews. A thing to note is that these questions aren’t just for one type of job, other jobs might actually have the same questions and others would have very different ones. Now get out there and get to work.

You can laugh now.

And by the way, Epstine didn’t kill himself.

Stock footage and how to use it.

If you need footage for your videos and you are low on time or funds, you can use these things called stock footage. Stocks are free media that you can use for any project you are working on from videos to images. However a thing to note is that even though it’s free that doesn’t mean you can just do anything you want with it. What everyone should know about anything involving creative media is something called a creative commons licence.

What is a Creative Commons license?

I’ve talked about fair use in the past, but now we’re going to talk about it for when it comes to stock media. According to creativecommons.org The “CC” license forges a balance inside the traditional “all rights reserved” that the copyright laws create, but of course you should give credit to the original creators and provide details of any changes made.

Stock media sites

Lets talk about the sites you can find them on.

  • Pexels.com is a site which can provide free images and footage. If you are familiar with the site unsplash.com, then it should seem familiar.
  • Pixbay.com is another site that offers free footage and images, and it also offers free vectors.
  • Mixit.co is yet another site you can use for stock footage and images.
  • Dareful.com is another site that can provide “some” free 4K resolution stocks, but not all are free. You must also provide credit to the creator and a link to the license and also indicate if any changes were made to the creators footage.
  • Videvo.net is one more site we will talk about. This site offers some free footage and it can also provide details on the kind of licenses that come with each footage.

Once again some stocks are free, but other footage must be either paid for or require a subscription. Sometimes you can even donate to some of these creators to show appreciation.

That’s most of what you should know for when it comes to using stock footage and how it’s really supposed to be used. It’s best to use your own footage of course, but if you need it these are few of the best places to get some. Now once again get out there and get to creating.

Different ways to edit a video

Photo by Sam McGhee on Unsplash

Let’s talk about the process of editing videos. Did you know that there are so many ways to edit videos? There’s linear and non-linear editing, and there’s offline and real-time editing.

Linear VS Non-linear

Linear editing is the process of editing in timeline order from start to finish. But with linear editing you have to do it from the start to the end, meaning you can’t backtrack. Fortunately that is where non-linear editing comes in. Non-Linear is editing that isn’t in chronological order, so you can backtrack and fix or add something that was way back there. Linear and non-linear editing can both be utilized when it comes to editing thanks to modern day technology, so you don’t have to risk doing one or the other.

Offline vs Real-time

Another type of editing is offline and real-time editing. Offline editing is when you take a copy of the raw footage and edit that one copy only. According to premiumbeat.com the copied footage is transcoded down to a more compressed and lower resolution format. The video will use this as proxy footage through the rough, fine and final cut. So the best time to use offline editing is when you need to lighten the work load when editing. Real-time editing is when you edit videos on the the timeline without isolating footage. In fact real-time editing uses cloud based programs to clip and edit across multiple platforms.

Words to know

Here’s a few video editing words to know.

  • Batch processing: In computer terms it is an efficient way of processing multiple transactions at the same time.
  • Project trimming: Basically video editing where you cut parts of footage either by slicing in between, or cutting out a section to isolate it for other uses.

This is how the process of video editing works. The newer programs like adobe premiere can do most of these anyway so you wouldn’t have to do exhaustive work to handle the editing processes. Now get out there and make your movies.

Project manager: Oversees the project, conveys the information between the client and the team. Has to design and of course manage the project.

Video specialist: Has to shoot quality videos, transfer the footage to the computers, edit the footage using digital non-linear editing (NLE) system, and deliver the files to the CDs, or the web.

These team members hold the projects together and must provide the best experiences for the clients. Without one of them the project would not work efficiently. Now team up and make something amazing.

SEO, SEM

Let’s talk about Search Engines.

There are Search Engine Optimization, and Marketing, and online reputation management.

Search engine optimization is the process of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

According to moz.com the quality of the traffic is the results of the search. The quantity of the search is the amount of the right people clicking on the right pages. For pages you don’t have to pay for are good, these are known as Organic traffic. You’ll know that by seeing the ones that say “Ad” on it.

Stuff like this

SEM, search engine marketing, is a form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search results through paid advertising. According to wordstream.com, SEM will use paid ads to gain traffic. Businesses will pay google (or whatever search engine they decide to use for some reason) to show their ads in search results. They auction for the spots and the highest bidder gets the spot. Right? WRONG. It certainly is advantageous for this but it isn’t necessary. To “win” an ad auction the two main factors that google evaluates, maximum bid, and quality score of your ads. Maximum bid is the max amount you are willing to pay of the ad, and quality score is the metric based on the overall quality of your ad.

Now online reputation management simply is the controls and regulation of a group or individuals reputation online. These companies do this using search results the regulate the groups reputation.

Onto the Jobs

Lets talk about jobs now. Entry level jobs start out as $20,500 a year, and the non-entry levels go past $50K. Right now as we “speak”, American creative in Fort Lauderdale is urgently hiring for website project manager and technician. They’re paying $20- $25 an hour, and for this job you need to be proficient in HTML, Photoshop, WordPress, and Microsoft Office. It includes flexible hours, and paid time off.

So this is another part to web designing that you should know about. Now get out there and make people popular.

Responsive web designing

When It comes to designing websites you must make the designs responsive, otherwise they will not be functional as a website.

When you go on a website and you see the mouse change or the thing you’re pointing at do a thing that shows that the website can take you somewhere else.

In the adobe software “Dreamweaver” you can create websites like the one I’ve made in HTML. You need to utilize the HTML (the structure) and the CSS (the design).

the guts of a website

In the HTML portion of the site, to make a hyperlink you need to add the opening “<a>” and closing “</a>” around the word IMAGES. But the <a> needs to have a href= in the opening “<a>”.

Jobs for this

There are a few positions open on Linkedin right now. These jobs can pay up to $41K – $127K depending on the job you are doing.

  • Junior web developer for EverCommerce. The job requires that you know HTML5/CSS of course, photoshop and strong ownership and accountability to judge multiple projects. It offers 401k, public transportation reimbursement, medical/dental insurance, parental leave.
  • Assistant WordPress developer from Dealer Inspire. Like how we talked about wordpress, this is yet another job that involves wordpress. Of course this requires you to know how to use wordpress. Also HTML5/CSS, and remain calm cool and collected under pressure (I cant do that).
  • Junior application developer Association for Talent Development (ATD). This job need you to design and implement web-based solutions. You need two years of CSS/HTML, experience in SQL.
  • Interactive designer from Sandhills Global. These people require you to know adobe software like photoshop, illustrator, and/or dreamweaver, and be able to learn new technologies and business functions.
  • Junior Web Developer for Stansberry Research. Like the others you need to know HTML/CSS. However you need to have 1-3 years of web development experience, and you also need to have a bachelors degree in computer science.

And this is some of the information you need to know about interactive design.

How to make animated web content

Creating animated web content is sort of like making animations for other stuff. For those of you who don’t know, animation is basically a method where figures are manipulated to create the illusion of movement. There is both 2D and 3D animation, and in the world of web designing you can technically do both.

From what I’ve read Toonboom is one of the top ten animation software’s for “animation” but personally I use Photoshop for manipulating pictures.

The timeline

This is the video timeline you will see

In every animation software, or movie making software in general, there will be a timeline showing you what will happen in the “movie”.

If you saw my post on: how to make a gif (not JIFF) then this should be no surprise to see this. The only difference here is exporting as an .mp4 than as a .gif.

pivot points

In the timeline I’ve added transformation pivot points to this animation so that it starts from one way and finishes on another. For this I made “rain drops” on one point and then I transformed them to look like they’re falling on the end point.

Final result

Now photoshop is a program you can use for animation but there is adobe animate that you can also use, which is specifically for animation as you can tell by the title of the program but you can also use it for html coding. Which is how most designers make there web banners for ads.

But don’t just take my word for it, try to use these programs yourself, and see what you can make.
